A Day of Adventures
Nomio is excited to spend the day with her family. Where will they go, and what exciting things will they do?
A Day of Adventures
It is a beautiful summer morning. As soon as Nomio opens her eyes, she starts planning her weekend fun.
She wants to go out with her parents and her sister Anu.
The family decides to visit a pet store to buy a cute animal.
The store bustles with customers. There are lots of adorable pets in the cages.
Nomio and her family walk around and see all the animals. Some animals are startled by children screaming with excitement, while others enjoy the loving attention.
Nomio stops suddenly. A surprising sound is coming from somewhere near her. She turns around and sees a colorful bird in a cage. The bird is repeating what the children say.
When Nomio spells her name to the parrot, the parrot repeats after her: “N-O-M-I-O.” Nomio is thrilled and smitten with the parrot.
There are many animals that excite Nomio and her family, including cute hedgehogs, rabbits, and puppies, as well as the calm turtles and beautiful fish. Everybody has so much fun playing with them.
While Nomio’s parents are talking to a salesperson near the fish tanks, Nomio with her older sister, Anu, visit the puppy section. The puppies love playing with Nomio.
As the store clerk is returning the puppy to its cage, it looks back at Nomio sadly. The puppies at the store are adorable and smart.
When the girls mention the puppy to their parents, they decide to take it home. Nomio doesn’t want to leave the parrot, so she asks to take it home as well.
After leaving the pet store, Nomio and her family head to their next destination. With the parrot and puppy by her side, Nomio starts thinking about what to name her new pets. Anu suggests calling the puppy Augie, and Nomio names the parrot Archie.
At the amusement park, a lot of children are having fun on the rides.
Nomio’s family rides on the Ferris wheel and the carousel, and play in the shooting gallery.
Nomio wins the target contest, and she is very happy to be rewarded with cotton candy from the clown.
Next, the family goes to the fun house. Everyone laughs because the mirrors turn their reflections into funny shapes and expressions.
When they pass a roller coaster, Nomio begs her parents to let her ride it just like the other kids. Her parents explain that it is too dangerous for her and it was not built to suit her needs. Nomio is very upset and bursts into tears.
An amusement park representative apologizes to Nomio: “I am very sorry that the ride is not accessible for you.”
Nomio calms down a bit. Anu notices that Nomio’s new friends, the parrot and the puppy, are watching Nomio with compassion, as if they are able to understand what is going on.
The family decides to ride in a swan boat next.
After having a light snack, they arrive at a stage where children are performing. Nomio is inspired by the children playing their instruments and singing. The people in the audience applaud the performers.
During a break in performances, Anu steps onto the stage and invites Nomio to perform with her. When everybody’s attention shifts to Nomio, she blushes as red as a tomato.
Anu plays her guitar, and Nomio begins to sing. People start clapping. Archie, the parrot, jumps in its cage, and Augie runs around Nomio’s wheelchair. Nomio and Anu’s parents are so happy to see the girls perform.
After a day filled with so many activities and so much fun, the sun begins to set. The whole family happily heads home.

———————————————
This is the first book in a trilogy that was created under the “Angels with Wheelchairs” initiative. The trilogy includes stories about the everyday lives of people living with disabilities. After sustaining injuries in a car accident, I began to use a wheelchair and experienced many unexpected challenges in my daily life. Through this experience, I observed the prevalence of discriminatory attitudes in society toward people with disabilities and saw a need to change this problematic mindset. The goal of this book is to promote a more accepting and inclusive society by sharing the message that every individual, regardless of their physical ability, has a fundamental right to access education, learn, and prosper in society from an early age.
